Conservatism (Latin: conservare, "to preserve") is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and opposes rapid change in society. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were." The first established use of the term in a political context was by François-René de Chateaubriand in 1819, following the French Revolution. The term has since been used to describe a wide range of views. According to Hailsham, a former chairman of the British Conservative Party, "Conservatism is not so much a philosophy as an attitude, a constant force, performing a timeless function in the development of a free society, and corresponding to a deep and permanent requirement of human nature itself".

Robert Eccleshall states, "It is the persistent image of society as a command structure in which the responsibilities of leadership can be exercised within the framework of a strong state manifested in divine-right royalism ... that distinguishes English conservatism from rival ideologies."

Political science often credits British politician Edmund Burke with many of the ideas now called conservative.

Conservative political parties include the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan, the Republican Party in the United States, the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, the Liberal Party of Australia, the Kuomintang of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Conservative Party of Canada, Pakistan Muslim League in Pakistan, and the Bharatiya Janata Party in India.

What's the difference between conservatism and neoconservatism?
Q. What's the difference between conservatism and neoconservatism.
Asked by Grizzy - Tue Jun 29 17:20:37 2010 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The biggest difference has to do with economic philosophy. 'Paleo-conservatives' (I don't really like that term, it sounds like cave men!) believed that the country should be run like a business, that balancing the budget was a top priority, whether that meant cutting spending, raising taxes, or some combination of the both. But neo-conservatives, starting with Ronald Reagan, believed we could balance the budget by spending MORE and taxing LESS. Not surprisingly, this idea was a spectacular failure, but it's become kind of a religious tenet with neocons. Even GW Bush, after doubling the entire pre-existing national debt, had no solutions to propose to reduce deficits except more tax cuts. Neoconservatives courted the Christian Right. [cont.]

What are the basic ideas of conservatism?
Q. Do you think our society should be organized in accordance to these ideas? Why? And if you DO favor conservatism, explain why and criticize liberalism and socialism.

A. Self-reliance, Personal responsiblity, Private property rights limited Govt. powers are just a few off the top of my head. I favor Conservatism over Liberalism because of the past 40 years of failed Liberal social and political policies that have gotten us nowhere. Todya, Liberalism and Socialism are being blurred into one and the same. Take Socialized Medicine. What country has made the most advances in Medicine in the past? the US. Which country has the availability of all medical services to everyone? The US. All this is from a free market system. It hasn't been perfect, and problems are there that make costs rise astronomically that need to be addressed. But the Liberal/Socialist alternative is to have the Govt. control healthcare.… [cont.]

Conservatism is a philosophy defined by Edmund Burke as "a disposition to preserve, and an ability to improve". The term derives from conserve; from Latin conservare, to keep, guard, observe. Classical conservatism does not readily avail itself to the ideology of objectives. It is a philosophy primarily concerned with means over ends. To a conservative, the goal of change is less important than the insistence that change be effected with a respect for the rule of law and traditions of society.
