The Southern Party was a minor political party in the United States that operated exclusively in the South. The party supported states' rights and increased Southern cultural and regionalist activism. The Party was formed by the League of the South in 1999 and experienced moderate success following the framing of the Asheville Declaration, which was touted by the Party as a second Declaration of Independence. Despite its initial success, the Southern Party was disbanded in 2003 following internal factionalism; all that exists of the Southern Party today are the remnants of its state chapters in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Mississippi. As much as I hate saying this, even though it is the truth, in answer to your question. L.B.J's Equal Rights amendment turned the democratic south into a republican base. There are a lot of racists people from the old south and this action by a democratic president rubbed them the wrong way. Another thing is that as the economy in the south started going south during democratic years they blamed that on them too. Most of the large businesses in the south were textile mills, making material for the sewing industry. When the larger clothing manufacturers started outsourcing and moving their factories overseas this started shutting down the mills in the south.
