The Mid-Atlantic states, also called middle Atlantic states or simply the mid Atlantic, form a region of the United States generally located between New England and the South. Its exact definition differs upon source, but the region often includes Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and sometimes New York, Virginia and West Virginia. The Mid-Atlantic has played an important role in the development of American culture, commerce, trade, and industry, yet it is one of the least self-conscious of American regions. It has been called "the typically American" region by Frederick Jackson Turner. Religious pluralism and ethnic diversity have been important elements of Mid-Atlantic society from its settlement by Dutch, Swedes, English Catholics, and Quakers through to the period of English rule, and beyond. After the American Revolution, the Mid-Atlantic region hosted each of the historic capitals of the United States, including the current federal capital, Washington D.C. In the early part of the nineteenth century, New York and Pennsylvania overtook Virginia as the most populous states and the New England states as the country's most important trading and industrial centers. Large numbers of German, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Polish, and other immigrants transformed the region, especially coastal cities such as New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, but also interior cities such as Pittsburgh and Buffalo. New York City, with its skyscrapers, subways, and headquarters of the United Nations, emerged in the twentieth century as an icon of modernity and American economic and cultural power. It would suffer the brunt of the September 11 attacks, along with two other places in the Mid-Atlantic, Arlington, Virginia and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. By the twenty-first century, the coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic were thoroughly urbanized. The Northeast Corridor and Interstate 95 linked an almost contiguous sprawl of suburbs and large and small cities, forming the Mid-Atlantic portion of the northeast megalopolis, one of the world's most important concentrations of finance, media, communications, education, medicine, and technology. Waves of Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Russian, Dominican, Jamaican, Filipinos, Pakistani, Guatemalan, Salvadoran, and other immigrants now are further transforming the Mid-Atlantic economy and culture. The Mid-Atlantic is a relatively affluent region of the nation, having 43 of the 100 highest-income counties in the nation based on median household income and 33 of the top 100 based on per capita income. Most of the Mid-Atlantic states rank among the 15 highest-income states in the nation by median household income and per capita income. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What colleges can I go to for under $8,000 total a year in the mid-atlantic (PA primarily) states? Q. Factors: SAT Scores- 610 Math, 520 Reading, 630 Writing, Top 10% Class Rank, 3.8 GPA, Has a brother already in college, Unemployed father, Mom who makes roughly $40,000 a year, o yeah I'm also a minority. Just another worried high school student, so any input would be great, Thanks! Asked by E_Rock - Mon Aug 25 12:31:50 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ehh...VERY few colleges are that cheap. Penn State College Park is $14,426 for in-state residents, and the other Penn State campuses (which aren't very good) are around $12,000. U Pitt is $11,368 (just for tuition) You should apply for scholarships, especially since you are a minority and since your GPA is pretty good...though I would recommend re-taking the SAT or taking the ACT, since your score is a little low. Colleges also give out tons of financial aid, so that will help you out...if you apply to colleges 'beneath' you, sometimes you will get a free ride (ie. have to pay nothing.) Q. I have a BA in English Lit and I'd like to continue on and get a masters and a PhD but I want to stay in the New England/Mid Atlantic States area...what schools there have the best English Lit master's program? Asked by Vikki B - Mon Sep 17 09:28:35 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It isn't really a good idea to limit yourself geographically. Beyond the Ivy League -- the best programs are at large state universities. The public universities in the Northeast are not as good as those in the rest of the country. The best English Literature programs have PhD programs, and only accept students to the PhD track. They give out a MA as a booby prize to those who are unable to finish. The top three programs are Harvard, Berkeley and Yale. Two of them are in the Northeast. The best schools in the East are the obvious ones -- the Ivy League schools. Beyond the Ivies, there are only a few really good programs in the Northeast -- NYU, Rutgers and University of Maryland. If you are willing to go South, then Virginia and… [cont.] Answered by Ranto - Mon Sep 17 09:54:34 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Mid-Atlantic states" Dorothy T. Schultz, environmental worker
