A major party is a political party that holds substantial influence in a country's politics, standing in contrast to a minor party. It should not be confused with majority party.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Major party: a political party having electoral strength sufficient to permit it to win control of a government usually with comparative regularity and when defeated to constitute the principal opposition to the party in power.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary online

Major parties hold a significant percentage of the vote in elections and claim higher membership than minor parties. Typically, major parties have the most donors, best-organized support networks and excellent funding for elections. Their candidates for political positions are closely watched since they have the highest chance of being elected to office because of the high membership, recognition and donations that these parties are able to generate.

In the United States, the major parties are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, which get most of the votes in elections. Since the American Civil War (1861–1865), only four presidential candidates who were not Republicans or Democrats have received over 10% of the popular vote, and one of these was a former major-party president.

Major parties in the United Kingdom are the Labour Party of prime minister Gordon Brown, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats.

In Australia the major parties are the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party of Australia. Federally (and in New South Wales) the Liberal Party of Australia is in coalition with the Nationals.

In Italy the major parties are the Democratic Party (PD) and the The People of Freedom party (PDL) of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Two major parties can lead to a two-party system. If there is only one major party, then it is a dominant-party system. In a multi-party system, a major party is one that occasionally controls the presidency or premiership and is the most influential party in a coalition government.

Is it likely we will see the emergence of a third major party?
Q. Or a smaller party replacing one of the two major parties? How likely is it that a president will NOT be from one of the two major parties?

A. daz417 is off track here a bit. The DNC/GOP are already ONE party as the following links... ...more than illustrate. NOTICE the date! This has been going on sense at LEAST 1988!!! Our Libertarian party is best in position to garner membership from the more moderate demmies & certainly the more right leaning of the GOP save for the churchianity zealots. Many folks are now doubting in sincerity the intent of the GOP/DNC organization as a functioning whole.

If you could create a new *major* third party, what issues would it run on?
Q. I hear a lot of complaining about both major parties (Democrat and Republican). And I agree with most of those complaints. So, I issue this challenge: create a platform for a NEW third-party. List what they should stand for and what their key, overriding characteristics are. The more detail the better, thanks! Please do not use this question as a space to bash another party, or to say how "unrealistic" this might be. If you don't have an answer, please do not submit one.

A. Fairness to all, This does not mean some would not suffer hardship but The government would not pick winners and losers. All candidates would get the exact same exposure and financing . All Americans treated the same, no special services for special groups. Corruption not allowed. No more ignoring some laws like immigration just because it benefits some. The rule of law is fair to all . That is the only way to have equality. When you think about it the corruption in our government is blatant . We need to stop closing our eyes to it .
